War Dancer by Oscar Howe

Another potent image by an artist who helped reshape American Indian art.

Signed and dated 1969, Oscar Howe likely portrayed a celebratory dance ahead of battle. Fractured planes of color animate the figure, a characteristic of Howe’s most revered expressions.

Should anyone be available to take in Dr. Red Shirt’s Oscar Howe Memorial Lecture held at the University of South Dakota on September 18, it will be held from 7-8 pm at the Colton Recital Hall. Her topic: The Teachings of Shell Face: Oral Tradition in Oscar Howe’s Art.

Hoping her talk will be taped, later to be available online.
