African American Art

If the 44th President of the United States had been a woman, we might witness an upsurge of focus on art by women artists.  2009 does not mark the first year the art world has devoted an entire auction session to the art of African Americans.  On February 17, 2009 Swann’s next sale for strictly African-American Fine Art featuring paintings, sculpture and works on paper from pre-1900 to the last quarter of the 20th century is scheduled. Call to order the catalogue at 212 254-4710 immediately. Later in February there is a printed and manuscript sale with respect to African Americans as well. Last year Swann’s catalogue for their African-American art sale sold out rather quickly.

Over My Head There's Trouble in the Air by John Biggers

SavvyCollector.com currently offers just two examples of African-American art.  A beautiful linocut by John Biggers (1924-2001) demonstrates an entirely successful, expressive depiction of the effect a tornado can have on innocent livestock.  Biggers studied with and befriended Elizabeth Catlett and Charles White, two giants in the field of African-American art.  In 1995 a retrospective for John Biggers’ art was held at the Houston Museum of Art and the Hampton University Museum in Hampton, Virginia.
