Volunteering to help a charity price art locally, I worked shoulder to shoulder with Anita, a savvy woman who commented every art appraiser’s lament “If only artists would sign their artworks legibly !!!” A prior blog introduces one truth, art by a famous artist does not guarantee consistently high values.
How about a fine work of art by an artist whose name you cannot identify? I purchased the handsome watercolor/ gouache painting pictured below dated 1934 wearing an illegible signature more than ten years ago. Couldn’t read the name then. Can’t now. Do I love it less than paintings by artists whose name I can make out? No, I do feel a little frustrated at times and hope to figure this puzzle out before I am dead. Its value to others; however, is extremely limited, as no specific artist can be linked to its making.
That said, it resides immediately next to my front door because it is visually yummy. I admire it daily.
Should someone recognize this signature, please contact me with the information.
