John Piper Retrospective Oundle School Chapel

Upcoming April 21, 2012 – June 10, 2012  more than 50 works spanning John Piper’s career will be presented in an exhibition titled John Piper and the Church

John Piper (1903-1991) was responsible for the development of modern art in British churches.  As an official War Artist in England, he focused heavily on bombed buildings of all sorts, but especially on damaged churches.  283 churches were lost during the war.  Beetween 1945 and 1956, only 41 were rebuilt.

The illustration above represents a stained glass design Piper created for the Oundle School Chapel windows.  Clearly his windows brought welcome color and a degree of modernity to these typically dark and anything but modern buildings.
